Stories Behind Bhai Dooj
Like any other festival, Bhai Dooj is also linked to some stories. Ancient Mythology states that Lord Yamraj (the God of death) visited his sister Yamuna in the month of Kartik on the ‘Shukla Paksha Dwitiya’. She welcomed her brother Yamraj with aarti and tilak. In exchange for that Yamraj showered his blessings on Yamuna. So, this is the day when Lord Yamraj gave a boon saying that any brother who will visit his sister’s house on this day will get extreme health and wealth.
Another story states that Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra on the second day after the new moon after killing the Demon King Narkasura. Subhadra also welcomed Lord Krishna just as Yamuna welcomed Lord Yamraj by performing aarti and applying tilak on Lord Krishna’s forehead.
